Frank B. Jernigan Intramural All-Star Award
Rules & Point Standings

2010-2011 Point Standings (coming soon)

Mr. Jernigan was a graduate of Boys High in Atlanta, served in the Naval Air Force during WWII, and earned undergraduate and Master's degrees from Emory University and an EdS degree from Georgia State. He was a committed educator, serving first as a teacher and coach (baseball, football, and wrestling) in the Atlanta School System and subsequently becoming the youngest man to be made principal at O'Keefe High.  He continued his career as principal at Birney Elementary and North Fulton High. He was active in educational organizations at the state and local level, serving in leadership positions in professional associations and as a member and then chairman of the Dekalb County Board of Education. In the early 1970's, he became the first Director of Recreational Services at Georgia State University. As he had done with the introduction of the "Upstream" program in the Atlanta City Schools (an outdoor program patterned after Outward Bound), Mr. Jernigan was able to share his love of outdoor adventure with college students with the development of Georgia State's "Touch the Earth" program. "Touch the Earth" put urban students on whitewater rivers and on mountain trails where he encouraged them to strive and grow and to be their best. "Piece of cake!" he'd shout as he plunged forward to meet new challenges. He embraced life and those he met with arms wide open, touching many with his zest for living life to its fullest. He was always ready with a mischievous grin, a wink, and a funny story. A highly competitive gifted athlete, he was inducted into Emory University's Sports Hall of Fame in 1992.

The Frank B. Jernigan Intramural All-Star Award goes to the team who participates in Intramurals while demonstrating good sportsmanship, organization, and leadership.

Points are awarded to teams who participate in the team sports designated at the beginning of the semester.  The goal of the competition is to encourage participants to play in a variety of sports.

Rules:
1. Groups/organizations must keep the same team name in order to receive points.
2. T-shirts will be awarded to 25 participants.
3. Groups/organizations can have multiple teams in a sport, but only 1 per league.  For example, you can have 1 men's team and 1 co-rec team, but both names must reflect the group/organization name.  Each team will be treated as two separate teams and the team point total that is higher will count towards the overall competition.

Prizes:
The winner at the end of spring semester will receive special Intramural Champion T-shirts and the Frank B. Jernigan Intramural Cup.  The team name and team picture will be displayed on the award plaque in the SRC.

Points:
A team’s top 5 scores are counted from a possible 7 events. 6 of the events are the Class I sports. The last event consists of a team’s top 4 scores from the 5 Class II sports.

For example - Team A earns the following points in the five Class II sports:  9, 10, 8, 13, 10.  The sum of the three highest is 33.  Team A earns the following points in the six Class I sports:  28, 37, 31, 30, 29, 31.  Including the 33 from the Class II sports, the five highest scores of the seven are 37, 33, 31, 31, 30.  These added together give the final score of 162.

Events are categorized into 2 classifications, each having its own point distribution.

Class I Sports
Fall Semester:  Flag Football, Volleyball, & Indoor Soccer
Spring Semester:  Basketball, Bowling, & Softball

Class I sports are the team sports that last multiple weeks.  The following point totals will apply:

Participation - Each team earns 15 points for participating in a sport and not forfeiting any games.  If a team forfeits one game, a team only receives 10 points.  If a team forfeits twice, they will not receive any participation points.

Sportsmanship - At the completion of each game, the officials, scorekeepers and supervisors working the event will rate the teams for their Sportsmanship Rating. This is based on the attitude and sportsmanship of the players, fans, and coaches before, during, and after the game towards other players, fans, coaches, and Intramural Staff.  The scale ranges from A+ to F; A+ being equated with the best behavior and sportsmanship and with F being poor behavior and sportsmanship.  The letter grade is converted to a number.  The sportsmanship score from all regular season and playoff games are averaged together to become the team’s sportsmanship rating (SR). Points awarded (PA) are calculated as follows:

PA = (SR – 3.25) x 10

Champions/2nd place - Teams can earn points for finishing 1st or 2nd in their respective leagues.  A team will earn 10 points if crowned champion, or 5 points for being 2nd place.  Points are not awarded for any other finish.

Modifier:  In theory, it is harder for a team to win a championship in a league with a lot of teams than it is to win a championship in a league with a few teams.  To account for this, each team has their score modified slightly.  This is done by comparing a team’s league to the league with the fewest number of teams.  For every extra team a league has compared to the smallest, the teams in that bigger league get a half point.

For example, League X has 10 teams, League Y has 5 teams.  Team A is in League X.  Team A will get 2.5 points added to their score.

Staff Rating - Teams can earn bonus points for how well they communicate, follow procedures, and how well they are organized.  This includes attending any mandatory meetings and/or completing online tests.  The rating is given by the coordinator and student staff.  Teams can earn anywhere from 1 to 5 points, with 5 being the best.

Class II Sports
Fall Semester:  Dodgeball, Kickball, & Ultimate Frisbee
Spring Semester:  Dodgeball, Kickball, & Outdoor Soccer

Class II sports are the team sports that last only 1 or 2 days.  The following point totals will apply:

Participation - Each team earns 5 points for participating in a sport and not forfeiting any games.  If a team forfeits, they will not receive any participation points.

Champions/2nd place - Teams can earn points for finishing 1st or 2nd in their respective leagues.  A team will earn 3 points if crowned champion, or 2 points for being 2nd place.

For every extra team a league has compared to the smallest, the teams in that bigger league get a quarter point.

For example, League X has 10 teams, League Y has 5 teams.  Team A is in League X.  Team A will get 1.25 points added to their score.

Staff Rating - Teams can earn bonus points for how well they communicate, follow procedures, how well they are organized, and their sportsmanship.  The rating is given by the coordinator and student staff.  Teams can earn anywhere from 1 to 5 points, with 5 being the best.
